The second round of the Western Hockey League Playoffs are set to begin Friday evening.
With the Brandon Wheat Kings and the soon-to-be Winnipeg ICE not qualifying for postseason play in the 2018-19 season, the eyes of Manitobans will typically tend to fall on other Manitobans still playing out their seasons. There are 17 skaters/goaltenders still alive in the WHL playoffs.
Vancouver Giants vs. Victoria Royals
After beating the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-2, the Giants will host the Royals - who also needed six games to solve the Kamloops Blazers. Featured Manitobans in this series are Vancouver's Trent Miner and Victoria's Parker Malchuk.
Everett Silvertips vs. Spokane Chiefs
The Silvertips and Chiefs meet up in the U.S. Division semifinal after dominant opening round performances against the Tri-City Americans and Portland Winterhawks. Both teams needed just five games to make it to the second round. Featured Manitobans in this series are Everett's Connor Dewar and Reece Vitelli, as well as Mike Ladyman, and Michael and Noah King in Spokane.
Prince Albert Raiders vs. Saskatoon Blades
After one of the greatest single-season performances in WHL history the 54-10-4 Raiders will host the Saskatoon Blades, who much like Prince Albert, opened their playoffs with four-straight victories. Saskatoon beat out Moose Jaw, while the Raiders took care of business against Red Deer. Featured Manitobans in this series are Prince Albert's Jakob Brook, Justin Nachbaur and Martin Max, alongside Tristen Robins, Cyle McNabb and Riley McKay.
Edmonton Oil Kings vs. Calgary Hitmen
The Oil Kings and Hitmen will renew hostilities after two very long-lasting opening round battles. Calgary got by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in game seven, while Edmonton took care of business in Medicine Hat in six games. Featured Manitobans in this series are Edmonton's Dylan Myskiw and Vinnie Loshiavo, while Calgary boasts Riley Stotts and Layne Toder.
