Winnipeg product Thomas Stuart-Dant will be taking his talents to Mentor, Ohio for the 2019-20 hockey season.
This past week, the 28-year-old agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Mentor Ice Breakers of the Federal Prospects Hockey League. The former Selkirk Fisherman will suit up for 56+ FPHL games this coming year in North America, after spending the past six years overseas.
Following a successful three-season career in the Keystone Junior Hockey League, in which the six-foot, 190-pound centreman collected 34 goals, 67 points and 79 penalty minutes in 72 games for the Fish, Stuart-Dant moved on to the Division I English Ice Hockey Association for three seasons, dressing for the Sutton Sting, Billingham Stars and the Cardiff Devils, producing at over a point-per-game rate. He finished his time in the NIHL with 50 goals and 101 points in 76 career games.
From there, Stuart-Dant suited up in the EIHL, the BeNeLiga, the German league the next three years, before playing out the 2018-19 season for Skautafelag Akureyrar of Iceland. In 13 regular season games, the well-travelled veteran put up 12 goals and 16 points, before adding another goal and three points in three playoff games, en route to the League Championship and President's Cup.
"I am very excited to sign with Mentor,” Stuart-Dant said in a team-issued press release. “I had some great conversations with Coach Duncan and this is an excellent opportunity for me to come on board as a veteran leader and help take the team to the next level. Mentor sounds like a really nice community and I look forward to meeting my new teammates and the great Ice Breakers fans."
Stuart-Dant will bring a wealth of knowledge and veteran experience to the young Ice Breakers team, situated 20 miles east of Cleveland, on the shores of Lake Erie. Head Coach and former member of the Winnipeg Jets Iain Duncan, and the Mentor Ice Breakers will hold their annual Free Agent Camp on the weekend of September 13th and 14th, 2019. The season begins in late October with a road series against the Watertown Wolves.
