The Red Lake Miners of the Superior International Junior Hockey League have made a splash in the Manitoba hockey market, acquiring two forwards from northern Manitoba in separate moves.

To kick things off, Red Lake acquired Ethan Stuckless from the OCN Storm, before picking up Bryce Young, also from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Stuckless, 19, split the 2017-18 season between Waywayseecappo of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and the OCN Storm of the Keystone Junior Hockey League. He put together 27 goals and 70 points in 35 total regular season games. The Flin Elon, MB. product played his bantam and midget AAA hockey with Norman.

Young, 18, of The Pas, MB. also spent the 2017-18 bouncing between the MJHL and KJHL, playing eight games for the OCN Blizzard, before finding his groove with the OCN Storm, collecting 32 goals and 61 total points in 27 games. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound winger also put up three points and 10 penalty minutes in four KJHL playoff games last season.

Following those trades, the Miners also picked up a rough and tumble 18-year-old, Kaidin Hodgson of Medicine Hat, AB. Hodgson had 155 penalty minutes in 2017-18.

On top of acquiring some depth for the coming year, the Miners officially changed their team name from the English River Miners to the Red Lake Miners in a unanimous decision at the Annual General Meeting. The new Red Lake name provides  a more accurate identity, both geographically and physically.

The 2018-19 Red Lake Miners will look to improve upon their 2017-18 season that saw the then English River Miners finish fourth with a 28-23-5 record. A name change and trades for two northern Manitoba forwards should definitely help the cause.
